Dealing With Unexpected Expenditures

A recent Gallup Poll is suggesting that 32%, or roughly one-third of Americans are spending less, and plan to continue this frugal habit in the years ahead.

This is the half empty half full glass outlook. Is the glass half empty or half full? Is the economic situation more complicated than that?

Here is the sobering reality. Most consumers around the globe are facing a worldwide recession. This means that everday citizens are spending less on everyday items, and will continue to hunt for bargain items whenever possible.

A survey in 2007, conducted by Eurostat, revealed that one third of the EU 27 population lived in a household that couldn’t afford an unexpected expenditure.

Seven percent lived in a household that had been unable to pay scheduled utility bills within the last year.

Three percent lived in a household that had been unable to pay rent, or the mortgage payment.

Ordinary people are cutting back on normal purchases. The term “staycation” has become part of the vernacular.
