NBC Acquires The Weather Channel

Ever wonder what happened to NBC Weather Plus? The weather service was cherished by many. I hadn’t thought much about it until I read an article by TV Week, which stated that NBC had shut down NBC Weather Plus.

NBC Weather Plus began on November 15, 2004, and ended on December 31, 2008. It was owned by NBC Universal and by local affiliates.

NBC Weather Plus used to be in competition with The Weather Channel. NBC Universal, along with other firms, acquired The Weather Channel on July 6, 2008. Landmark Communications previously owned The Weather Channel. The Weather Channel was launched on May 2, 1982.

The other firms partnering with NBC are Bain Capital and Blackstone Group.

The transition of The Weather Channel propelled the termination of several meteorologists that had worked there for years. The employees were: Kristina Abernathy, Eboni Deon, Kristin Dodd, Rich Johnson, Cheryl Lemke, Mark Mancuso and Dave Schwartz. Most had been with the service for more than 10 years.

The merger of NBC and The Weather Channel began in May of 2009. If you have seen Al Roker on The Weather Channel, now you know why. Todd Santos is now with The Weather Channel. Some remaining members of NBC Weather Plus joined affiliates of NBC, while others joined CBS.

Sadly, the founder of The Weather Channel, Frank Batten, died on September 10, 2009 at the age of 82.
