Transforming The Way America Flies – Next Generation Air Transportation System
The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) will transform aviation in America. The FAA’s NextGen Implementation Plan is going to overhaul many aspects of air transport. Developing improvements that are being initiated are: new operational capabilities, new infrastructure, better safety, better security, and better environmental practices.
According to the FAA, air traffic is predicted to double by the year 2015. Air traffic controllers are struggling with traffic today. Imagine twofold traffic.
Airport delays cost at least $9 billion a year. Delays could cost as much as $22 billion a year by 2015. It is apparent that efficiency needs improvement. The current system is overloaded.
For over 50 years, only radar (radio detection and ranging) and voice have been utilized to aid navigation. This is about to change.
Objectives are currently being met with 21st century technology. These commitments are supposed to materialize between 2012-2018.
One key element of NextGen is Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B). This uses GPS Navigation to provide data to air traffic controllers and pilots. ADS-B has significant advantages over radar systems. It is much more precise and covers broader areas.
GPS covers all areas with accuracy, especially enhancing mobility in areas that radar doesn’t cover. The Gulf Of Mexico is one example.
ADS-B has been used in Alaska, and at Louisville’s UPS facilities. It will soon be used in Miami, Philadelphia, and the Gulf Of Mexico.
Voice transmissions will be sent via digital instead of analog. Digital imaging will be accessible to all users, allowing for real time data, such as weather and other important information. Computerization will be widespread. Improvement of infrastructure will also be vital, such as runway status lights, etc.
If America expects to compete in a global environment, programs like NexGen will be essential.
