EU Sets Standard For Television Energy Consumption
The new EU standards will phase out bad performing television sets, according to the Daily Telegraph. Big plasma sets are the target, since they use four times as much as conventional televisions. One hundred watt incandescent light bulbs will be banned in Europe also.
But not all plasma sets will be banned completely. Plasma sets that meet the new standards will be acceptable. Energy ratings will be labeled on all televisions.
LCD television sets will not be targeted, since they are more energy efficient than plasma sets.
The increase of gadgets in households is responsible for twice the amount of power being consumed.
And some Europeans are very upset about the ban on plasma televisions. Some are condemning the strict regulations, and saying that EU governments are interfering with their personal lives.
The European Commission stated that newspapers were printing stories about the banning of all plasma sets. This is speculation.
Sarah Lambert of the EU said that “the Commission has decided to target televisions because sales are going through the roof and certain models take up a lot of energy. We are working with manufacturers and other groups such as the environmental lobby, retailers and small businesses because we are not legislating in a vacuum.”
