Demonstration At Menwith Hill

In the United States it’s called Independence Day. On July 4, 1776, America declared independence from Great Britain. In 1938, it became a paid holiday.

Ironically, in a strange twist of fate it is now the Brits who are demanding for Independence Day from the U.S. On July 4 of every year, people demonstrate at Menwith Hill.

It all starts in the top secret U.S. military base, Menwith Hill, which is located in the U.K.’s Yorkshire Dales.

Menwith Hill is a Royal Air Force station near Harrogate, North Yorkshire. It provides intelligence to the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Menwith Hill Station was opened on 545 acres (2.21 km2) of land acquired in 1954. Some of the land is leased to the United States.

The U.S. base symbolizes the growing discontent that some Brits feel toward a dominant U.S. There are 32 satellite dishes (adding number 33) which are housed inside of huge golf ball like structures. They allow the operators to eavesdrop on telephone calls, faxes, and emails from around the world.

The National Security Agency took control of the sight in 1966.
