To Dew Or Not To Dew…

What are you drinking? Better question yet: what is in the beverage you have? Have you ever thought about that?

The hot debate usually is about caffeine. We all know that too much of it is bad for you. But what about the other ingredients in beverages?

Let’s get specific. The main ingredient in question is brominated vegetable oil . This is vegetable oil with the element bromine  added to it.

Bromine comes from seaweed. Bromine  is a very dangerous element. Should we be drinking anything with bromine in it?

Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is added to various beverages to help keep some ingredients suspended and it also gives the drink a cloudy appearance. Bromine increases the density of the oil.

While the use of BVO is permitted in the United States, it is reported that over 100 (estimated 120) countries have banned the use of BVO. Americans should be aware about the health risks of consuming BVO. Brominated vegetable oil probably should be banned. Safer substitutes may be available.
