Drowsy Driving Awareness

Drowsy driving, also called driver fatigue, is a very serious problem. This is not reported, not considered illegal, and not often discussed. Driving while drowsy can be every bit as lethal as a person under the influence of alcohol.

 Driver Fatigue Statistics

  • Each year an average of 1,550 persons will die.
  • About 71,000 injuries will occur every year.
  • An estimated 100,000 crashes will occur each year.
  • About 20% of drivers will doze off while driving.
  • The crash is likely to be serious.

    Cause And High Risk Factors
  • Lack of awareness about the dangers of dozing and driving.
  • High risk schedules: 12:00 A.M. – 6:00 A.M.
  • Occupations that induce sleep deprivation.
  • Consumption of alcohol.
  • Consumption of medicines or drugs.
  • Taking long road trips without sleeping.
  • Age group of 16-29, especially male.

  • Prevention

  • Get adequate amount of sleep.
  • Do not drink and drive.
  • Do not use drugs and drive.
  • Car pool when possible.
  • Take a nap. This is very effective.
  • Recognize the symptoms of drowsiness.

  • Use some good common sense. If you have worked that 10:00 P.M. – 6:00 A.M. shift, pull over and get some coffee, especially if you have to drive some distance. Find someone to talk to! It is a proven stat that most accidents happen while the driver is alone.

Most of us are under the illusion that when we are very tired we can ignore fatigue and make that commute without dozing. This is dangerous and the results can prove to be disastrous. The fact is that most of us have dozed briefly on occasion while driving, whether we are willing to admit it or not. This is the worst thing that anyone should do and absolutely not worth the risk.

In an instant one could lose total control of the vehicle with no possibility of correction. That’s all it takes. Statistics have proven that a percentage of people have gambled with their lives, and they lost.

Sleep deprivation is a common problem in today’s busy society. Although dozing and driving may not be prohibited, a court of law can punish you if you are found guilty and you created an accident. It is irresponsible and unethical. Drive smart. Drive alert.
