The Amazon Yap may add voice to future products designed by the company. Amazon did buy Yap in 2011, and this might have been a move to compete with Apple’s Siri.

As was stated in the video, Yap is speech-to-text, while Siri is an intelligent personal assistant. There is a difference here, but Yap could be a beginning of something else. It could definitely help Amazon with sales.

Siri was originally introduced as an iOS application available in the App Store by Siri, Inc., which was acquired by Apple on April 28, 2010.

Siri is part of iOS 6, and available on the iPhone 4S, and the new iPad (3rd Generation).

Siri was originally funded by DARPA, along with additional help from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Rochester, the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, Oregon State University, the University of Southern California, and Stanford University.

The deal was closed in September, giving Amazon control of Yap’s technology. Yap merged with a shell company known as Dion Acquisition Sub Inc., which is located in Seattle.
