The USS Pennsylvania (ACR-4) was commissioned on March 9, 1905. On January 18, 1911, a plane flown by Eugene Ely from the Tanforan airfield in San Bruno, California landed on a platform constructed on her afterdeck. This was the first successful aircraft landing on a ship.

The USS Pennsylvania was renamed Pittsburgh on August 27, 1912.

The 1911 Curtiss Model D (Curtiss Pusher) was among the very first aircraft in the world to be built in any quantity. It was the first aircraft take-off from the deck of a ship, the USS Birmingham, and the first landing, on the USS Pennsylvania several days apart.

The Hiller Aviation Museum, located in San Carlos, California, has the Curtiss Pusher, and you can see it starting at frame 15:29 in the video.

Here’s a narrative of the event.
