There’s no doubt that laptops, handhelds, and tablets are ubiquitous in our current age of computers. For those of us that cut our teeth on the desktop PC,  it’s difficult to imagine the finality of it.  Is the desktop tower becoming extinct?

Some technical experts think so. Laptops are comparable with desktop towers for the most part. Actually both have their quirks. The laptop seems to be the standard now because of its convenience and mobility. And they’re so ever popular!

As for price comparison, laptops have certainly come down.

According to a report by Slate, desktop sales are definitely declining. The report predicts that by 2015 only 18% of computers sales will be the desktop. As the article clearly points out, around 80% of sales will be of the portable nature. In the 1990’s this would have been unthinkable.

A more recent report from Slate indicates the Dell problem: “The PC market is shrinking in the face of the rising popularity of tablets and smartphones, and incumbent PC makers are seeing their profit margins challenged by new entrants such as Asus and Lenovo.”

And remember the original Star Trek series where the portable phone was highlighted? “Beam me up Scotty” is a familiar saying among us old relics. Some of those well designed stage props have become a reality. Still not sure about the transporter machine though. Ahhh, the good old days.

The electronic consumer market sure is changing. The market has widened and there are more females than ever punching at the keyboards. Adding the social media craze into the big picture, this gives us a vision of the new mobile customer.

The decline of the desktop is probably inevitable. Nevertheless, I will be found plucking at the keys on my old desktop. Good day!
